Before using new V-M reels I "open-out" the chip slots using an artists pallete knife with the end modified (with tin snips and an oil stone) as shown below.
The pallete knife is a Daler-Rowney No. 93 and the blade end is between .008" & .010" thick (film is about .006" thick).
